Depressing situation

Now the situation was such that if any food came to Makkah Mukkarrama from outside, the pagans used to buy all of it and did not let it reach the Muslims.  When the children of the refugees cried because of hunger, the pagans would laugh and celebrate on hearing their voices.  The milk of the females had dried up.  The refugees remained hungry for days and days.  Sometimes they would boil leaves of the trees and eat them to fill their stomach.  Hazrat’e Sayyiduna Saad bin Abi-Waqaas (radi Allahu anhu) says that once during the night he found a piece of dried leather.  He washed it with water, then heated it in fire, grinded it, and mixed it with water and drank it like ‘Sattu’ (a drink made out of very nutritious seeds, rich in vitamins) to fill his stomach.
